Character & Canon: Yugi Motou | Yu-Gi-Oh! DM (Post-Canon)
District: Crystalden

Personality: Yugi Motou's a good, kind-hearted person; he really cares about people and he tries his best to do the right thing. He's pretty shy and a little timid, but he tries to be polite to everyone he meets, and friendly to those who aren't cruel to him. His gentleness and kind heart is, unfortunately, exploited quite a few times. There are moments where Yugi is very naïve - he wants to think well of everyone, so he's often too blindly innocent and trusting, and he does a lot of things without thinking about the possible consequences. He loses his Millennium Puzzle so often because, on several occasions, he hands it over to someone who asks nicely for it; in a similar situation, he loses his powerful Exodia cards because he trusted Insector Haga, who immediately threw them into the ocean.

In addition to his kind nature, Yugi is selfless. He won't hesitate to sacrifice himself for other people, especially if those people are considered his friends. He continues to show this side of himself throughout the series, even when they're minor sacrifices - for instance, he sets Yami Yugi up on a date with Anzu, the girl he's had a crush on since they were children, because he thinks it might cheer Yami Yugi up. He was determined to help Yami Yugi recover his old memories, even knowing that it could deprive him of the best friend he's ever had. Yugi never once regrets the sacrifices he has made, and never thinks of doing anything different.

What Yugi values above all else is friendship. Initially an unpopular person, not eager to join in others' games because he normally brought his own, he never had someone that he could count on as a true friend prior to the series. (He had Anzu as his childhood friend, but she mostly protected him from bullies and advised him that he needed to be stronger.) When he completes the Millennium Puzzle, after not being able to do so for eight years, out of all the things he could have wished for Yugi simply wished for a friend who he can count on, and who won't abandon him. (Once meeting Yami Yugi, he's always referred to him as 'The Other Me,' and did so throughout the entire series; Yami Yugi states to Yugi after their duel that he's no longer 'The Other Yugi' anymore, and that Yugi is his own man.) To Yugi, his friends are a huge part of his life, and he's always looking to make new friends no matter who he meets. If they're willing to accept his friendship, it doesn't matter to him who they are or what they've done in the past. Yugi even tries to reach out to Kaiba, with the help of Yami Yugi, even after Kaiba tried to murder him and all of his friends. If someone has good inside their heart, Yugi will never consider them unworthy of his friendship, because he knows what it's like to be without friends, and one of his greatest fears is losing them again.

Unlike Yami Yugi, Yugi is willing to lose - which is a concept that Yami Yugi struggles with initially - and to forgive almost anyone. He does not condemn people for what they have done in the past, nor does he desire revenge; Otogi and Kaiba are examples of this, but also Malik, who nearly killed them all throughout the Battle City tournament. Yugi doesn't like to hurt people or to see people get hurt, and tries to abide by what is right. Because of that, he is generally passive until someone that he loves is threatened somehow. Before Yami Yugi existed to protect him, he just accepted the abuse without trying to fight back.

Apart from his family and friends, there is one other thing that Yugi really had a strong passion for - games. No matter what game it is, he always gets excited about them. Gaming is, perhaps, the only thing that gives him confidence other than Yami Yugi; for the most, he's very good at pretty much every game that has ever existed, and even if he's modest about his abilities he knows this. Because he loves games a lot, he's actually comfortable with who he is and enjoys doing what he loves.

Despite his timidity, passiveness and insecurity, Yugi is actually a very brave boy. He remains like this despite all of the disturbing changes that he's endured after he solves the Millennium Puzzle: his previously mentioned events of self-sacrifice has shown his courage and his willingness to stand up to danger, and for the most he's insisted to Yami Yugi that he go through this by himself. There is a powerful strength in his heart that Yugi fails to see through his insecure nature; Yami Yugi even states that the day will come when Yugi surpasses him.

While Yugi tends towards a passive approach, there are times when he is very stubborn. He won't stop or be deterred when his heart is set on something, no matter who tries to convince him otherwise - even if it's Yami Yugi. If Yugi believes with all his heart that there is something he has to do, he'll do so without question. Yugi is also quite stubborn when he feels that the blame or responsibility for something falls on him, and he will do his best to right the situation.

Being a talented gamer, Yugi never brags about it but he's a shrewd thinker and an intelligent strategist. However, he often follows his heart against what other people might call common sense, and it hasn't always gone the right way. His Battle City duel with the brainwashed Jounouchi also reflects his tendency to go with his heart and his beliefs over caution or intelligence; he takes control from Yami Yugi despite the danger both are put in, hoping that it will help save his best friend from Malik's mind control.

What Yugi learns over the course of the series, particularly in his final duel against Yami Yugi, now known by his real name as Atem, is to stand on his own, to rely on his own strengths and to trust in his own abilities when it really comes down to it. (It was at the end of the duel when Atem admitted what he had known would happen since the fated Battle City duel with Jounouchi at the docks: Yugi had finally surpassed him.) Although he tearfully confesses to Atem in their final moments together that he still feels that he's too weak, that he's always followed Atem throughout their journey and that he wanted to be strong like Atem, he walks away from their parting with a renewed strength in his heart, ready to be his own person and to move towards his own future with the strength and confidence that Yami Yugi taught him.

Questions/Comments/Concerns: Would Yugi be allowed to bring his deck? If so, I'll provide a list of his cards with the exception of the Egyptian God cards!
